Developed in 1945 as the country’s national carrier, the Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopian) played a key role in the creation of the largest African airlines network. Today, Ethiopian Airlines is the leading and most profitable airline, providing annual transfer of 7.6 million passengers and over 266.000 tonnes of cargo, through a current fleet of 91 aircrafts, realizing revenues of US$2.5 billion in 2016. EAL currently operates to over 55 destinations in Africa including Zambia. Since the establishment of the first flight to Zambia in 1996, the airline has developed connections from Lusaka, offering 10 flights on weekly basis, and daily flights from Ndola. Tigist Eshetu says, “Ethiopian plays a major role in fostering the export activities of Zambia by operating three cargo flights on weekly basis”.
