ICPE-CA Bucharest

Romania’s award-winning National Institute for Research and Development in Electrical Engineering (ICPE-CA Bucharest) is ranked one of Romania’s most advanced and productive research facilities. It has earned a strong reputation both nationally and internationally. ICPE-CA’s specialty is to develop innovative technologies which will help make private-sector and public-sector organisations more successful and competitive and which will also benefit the environment through achieving greater energy efficiency.

“We want ICPE-CA to be the preferred scientific research centre concerning generating and efficiently using electrical energy. We have around 35 researchers, a department focusing on advanced materials, and a department focusing on non-conventional electro-mechanical motors,” explains General Manager Wilhelm Kappel. The institute’s activities are funded by the EU and by Romania’s national budget.

Expertise in nano technologies

ICPE-CA partners with companies in many countries, including Germany, Russia and China. It is well known for its expertise in diverse fields, including magnetic materials and nano-technologies as well as cutting-edge devices for the auto industry. Wilhelm Kappel explains, “We have worked with Chinese companies on nano-technologies since 1984, and we have developed some very good magnetic materials, such as oxygen sensors like the lambda probe that are used in cars’ engines. Our research in advanced materials includes research on carbonic, ceramic, magnetic, and polymeric materials, while our department for non-conventional electro-mechanic motors researches and develops engines that are very small, only tens of nano metres.” ICPE-CA welcomes the chance to collaborate with and provide high-tech products for automobile enterprises and other companies around the globe.

Over the coming years, ICPE-CA plans to design and build conductors from carbonic materials. To potential partners around the globe, Wilhelm Kappel says, “ICPE-CA has a strong tradition starting from 1950 and now is known worldwide as an independent institute with exceptional electrical-engineering expertise.”
