Established in 1992, the Valahia University of Targoviste (UVT) is a non-profit public higher education institution, enrolling over 10,000 students in the dynamic Romanian region of Dambovita. After the 1989 democratic revolution, the idea to establish the university was born out of the concept of developing regional universities, a common practice in the most advanced countries in the European Union and the United States.

UVT offers courses and programs leading to officially recognised higher education degrees starting from pre-bachelor (certificates, diplomas), bachelor degrees, master’s and doctorate degrees. Its faculties provide excellence in teaching and research in the areas of engineering, electronics and information technology, environmental engineering and food science, mechanics, economics, law and administrative sciences, political sciences, letters and communication, arts, humanities, orthodox theology and educational science.

“We are no longer a young university, but a mature university with an outstanding teaching staff. We define ourselves as a comprehensive, entrepreneurial, medium-sized university in the Romanian higher education area, competitive at the national level and with international visibility,” says Rector Calin D. Oros.

UVT’s newly built campus which cost €14 million, provides students and researchers access to comfortable modern facilities, in addition to the University’s extensive library, with over 85,000 books, periodicals and electronic databases.

The competent international relations office assists incoming and outgoing faculty and student mobility. Students have the option of being accommodated in the six hostels offered by the University, with 1,000 available places in three-star accommodation. Sporting facilities for athletics, football, tennis, swimming, gymnastics and aerobics are available in various locations throughout Targoviste, while at the University Students Club, students can compete in chess, tennis and handball. University Health Services provide general health care protection and dental services.

Centres for applied learning are boosting students’ employability

In addition to the teaching and research performed by over 320 fellows, the University incorporates training centres, adapted to the needs of the students and the labour market which are closely correlated to its socio-economic surrounding”, says Calin D. Oros.

The most well-known centre of the University is the Scientific and Technological Multidisciplinary Research Institute (ICSTM-UVT). As an independent professional organisation, under the aegis of the University, it is an innovative hub for students, scholars and practitioners for the design and implementation of multidisciplinary research and development projects. Its new cutting-edge facility was financed by the European Union structural funds after winning the bid in a very competitive procedure. The Institute delivers its products and services through direct collaboration with targeted beneficiaries and stakeholders, a fact that attracts a growing number of students to get engaged in its work. “We believe in providing state-of-the-art education, but also we provide students with the practical skills and support networks necessary to discover and develop their full professional potentials,” the Rector concludes.
