Antalya Airport, Gateway to Turkey, Seeing Dynamic Growth

“We focus on making sure that every passenger travelling through the airport comes away with a positive impression”

Alexander Laukenmann, General Manager

Turkey’s Antalya Airport has seen exponential growth over the past few years and is continuing to expand. General Manager Alexander Laukenmann explains, “In the past, Antalya was considered to be a small charter airport, but this image is changing. We served almost 23 million passengers in 2010, 18.8% more than in 2009. We are starting to promote our airport internationally.” Antalya Airport is now Turkey’s top airport in international passenger arrivals. By mid 2011, the airport’s growth in passenger traffic stood at 28%, with throughput forecast to rise to 25 million this year.

Antalya Airport’s terminals are operated by ICF Airports, which has been managing the domestic terminal and International Terminal 1 since 2007 and, in 2009, won the right to manage the airport’s International Terminal 2 until 2024. ICT Airports is a joint venture between Germany-based aviation leader Fraport AG, which has been active in Turkey for over a decade, and IC Ictas, a prominent Turkish construction company. ICF Airports is a true partnership that builds on the synergies between the in-depth local knowledge of the Turkish enterprise and Fraport’s international expertise.

Benchmark in Turkey’s tourism and transport sectors

As Alexander Laukenmann points out, Antalya Airport plays a key role in supporting Turkey’s economic development, particularly its rapidly expanding tourism sector. “We focus on making sure that every passenger travelling through the airport comes away with a positive impression. We want to serve as a benchmark in Turkey’s tourism and transport sectors,” he explains.

Although it was not required to do so by its concession agreement, ICF opened a new €100 million domestic terminal at the airport last year, the first build-operate-transfer project in Turkey’s aviation sector. “We have also modernised all retail facilities and instituted an Open Gate system in Terminal 1, significantly speeding up passenger flows,” Alexander Laukenmann says.

Operated according to the highest international standards, Antalya Airport has been awarded ISO certification in Quality Management Systems, Environment Management Systems, Customer Satisfaction and Occupational Health Systems. It has also achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation and the Turkish Green Airport Certificate and is ranked a Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) airport.

In February this year, ICF Airports hosted the Routes Tourism Mediterranean initiative, which helped make international tourism and aviation leaders more aware of the high quality airport services available at Antalya Airport as well as Antalya’s exceptional attractions as a year round tourism destination. Antalya Airport is the world’s gateway to Turkey.

ICF Airports has also been awarded in June with the most important international airport award “Europe’s Best Airport” in the category of 10-25 million passengers by the Airport Council International (ACI) Europe in a ceremony organised in Lisbon. ACI Europe organization represents 400 airports from 46 European country and is the main airport organization of Airports in Europe.

The jury of the “Best Airport Award” by ACI Europe was composed of well-respected and independent organisations like ACI World, Eurocontrol and ECAC. ICF Airports was awarded thanks to its physical and commercial transformation in the past decade, and due to its successful solutions in termsof efficiency, quality and environmental awareness.
