Hitgalut Consultants, founded in 2011, has diversified over its brief history and now boasts seven independent consultants, each with a specialization in different sectors of the economy. While serving traditional investor favorites such as mining and finance, the firm also consults in a wide variety of lesser-known sectors, such as the arts, education and development, and recently pioneered Zambia’s first multidisciplinary arts festival.

The firm acts as a conduit for international investors to create mutually beneficial links with local Zambian enterprises. “We want to bring in more investors, in all sectors, not just one sector, mainly because we want to be self-sustaining in the long term,” Chilufya Chilangwa explains. “We believe that we can bring the investment industry to a more mature level.”

While the firm is constantly seeking to strengthen its portfolio of clients, Hitgalut Consultants places a higher premium on ensuring that the investors it partners with are quality organizations with a commitment to transparency and good governance. “We want to make sure that we get adequate investors who will not only get a return on their investment, but help the communities they’re in as well.”

Hitgalut Consultants is driven by the desire to play an integral role in Zambia’s long-term growth.  “Our job is to facilitate sustainable growth for Zambia. We also want to promote development in rural areas, not just in cities.” While investors have traditionally flocked to tried and true sectors of the Zambian economy, Chilufya Chilangwa believes that other sectors can play a sizable part in changing the face of Zambia.  Agriculture, renewable energy, health and education are all sectors that have the dual benefit of driving economic growth and making life better for Zambian people.

Capacity-builder for private sector

Beyond simply acting as a liaison between international investors and local businesses, Hitgalut Consultants also works to ensure that local businesses have the knowledge and capabilities to work in collaboration with international organizations.  “We offer training for local companies in team-building, leadership, dealing with international partners and markets, and more. We want to make sure the partnerships we facilitate are long term and sustainable.”

Enthusiastic about Zambia’s prospects, Chilufya Chilangwa believes that the time is now for international investors to come to Zambia. “Zambia is a hotspot right now in all sectors. They are all very fresh. If you don’t strike when the iron is hot, you miss the boat.”
