For business and leisure travellers visiting Bucharest, Tempo Hotel offers a true home-away-from-home experience. Owner-manager Gulen Hashmi explains that the three-star boutique property puts the focus on service. She says, “Our customers consistently mention that our staff members have smiles on their faces. We spend a lot of time finding the right staff and this effort has paid off. Service with a smile can really make a difference.”

Tempo Hotel has 31 guestrooms, each equipped with a minibar, cable TV, free high-speed WiFi Internet connections, individually controlled air-conditioning and heating, direct-dial telephone, a safe and an electric kettle. Some rooms have terraces. The hotel’s amenities include a breakfast room, business services, reception 24/7, concierge services, a meeting room for up to 10 guests, a bar and an airport shuttle for a surcharge.

The locally-owned and -operated hotel opened in 2004 at the very beginning of Romania’s tourism development and has been thriving ever since, even during the financial crisis. General Manager Cristina Solomon points out, “During the crisis, we continued to attract guests because we knew what they wanted and they appreciated what we gave them.” Explaining Tempo Hotel’s success story, she adds, “In addition to our excellent service, we have an online reservation system, our own website, recommendation from our partners, and great feedback from our guests. We mainly serve the corporate market, but we are welcoming more and more leisure travellers as well.”

Building a sustainable tourism industry

Tempo Hotel is looking forward to continued strong growth as more international travellers discover Romania’s tourism appeal. Gulen Hashmi says, “Romania offers beautiful nature, monasteries and castles, a rich cultural heritage, unique handicrafts, great nightlife in Bucharest and much more. Now we need to make sure that Romania’s tourism development is sustainable. I am involved in the ‘Human Rights to Water in the Hotel Industry’ project, which we will begin in Switzerland and then expand to other countries.” In addition to promoting sustainable tourism in Romania, Tempo Hotel is involved in corporate-social-responsibility projects, including supporting local orphanages.

Both Cristina Solomon and Gulen Hashmi are committed to continuing to put their guests’ needs first. Gulen Hashmi says, “Real happiness lies in creating happiness for other people. We invest in our customers and strive to have good relations with our suppliers and employees as well. All hoteliers should be on this same page. We want collaboration rather than competition, and we welcome a chance to form partnerships, for example by offering joint tourism packages.”
