Hamrokhon Zarifi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan, discusses his country’s strong commitment to promoting international peace and understanding.

European Times: How would you describe Tajikistan’s international relations?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: Today the Republic of Tajikistan has 33 diplomatic and consular missions abroad, among them 24 embassies, 5 general consulates, 3 consulates and a permanent mission to the United Nations. The activities of these missions abroad allow the country to lead an active, multidimensional and effective foreign policy. To attract investments and accelerate the development of the business sector and tourism, we have simplified the issue of visas for 68 foreign countries.

European Times: How about your relations with your neighbours in the region?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: We have some problems, but we are trying to solve them in a constructive way, and I believe we are making progress. We are promoting unity among different cultures as well as regional peace and stability.

European Times: What about your relations with the EU?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: We have quite a good relationship with the EU and with individual European nations. We aim for Tajikistan to serve as a bridge between Europe, Asia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The EU is an important partner for Tajikistan, not only through business investment, but also in the development of education and tourism sectors. We are working to build a democratic system like Europe’s. This takes time, and we need the help of our international partners to deal with challenges like corruption and human rights issues.

European Times: What are your main goals for the next five years?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: Tajikistan leads its internal and foreign policies with consideration of realisation of three strategic goals: overcoming the communication deadlock, ensuring energy-independence and foodsecurity. And, of course, the realisation of these goals is also a main task of the ministry. Our ministry focuses on maintaining productive international relations as well.

European Times: What are the major challenges your ministry faces?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: Along with existing modern threats and challenges, among the major problems affecting our country remain an issue of stabilisation of the situation in Afghanistan and the threats originating from it. Through its efforts and jointly with the international community, Tajikistan fights against such threats and challenges as terrorism, extremism, drug-trafficking and illegal trade in people and arms.

European Times: What is your personal message to our readers?

Hamrokhon Zarifi: Sometimes the media focusses on negative things in Tajikistan and I would like people to know about the many positive aspects of our country. We have developed strong trade activities, roads and communications are getting much better, we have an open market, and we have great growth potential in many sectors. We live in a difficult time, but we are patient and will continue to build on our many accomplishments.
