The Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL), formed when the Uganda Electricity Board was unbundled in 1999, monitors the investments, operations and maintenance efforts of Eskom, the country’s primary generator of electricity.

In addition to this important supervisory role, UEGCL also offers consulting services and is involved in the construction of hydropower plants across Uganda.

Managing Director John Mugyenzi explains, “Doing our job has been a challenge from the start and we are still in need of support, especially financial support. But, despite our challenges, we have persevered to the best of our ability over the years, making us the strong company we are now.” UEGCL is not only playing a key role in upgrading Uganda’s business climate but is also giving back to the local community in various ways, serving as a benchmark in the country’s energy industry.

John Mugyenzi is very positive about the future of Uganda and of UEGCL, which he says will increasingly concentrate on developing and monitoring hydropower projects. He explains, “Uganda is such a safe place; we have very good policing and a community that tends to look out for each other.” He urges international investors to look into opportunities in Uganda’s high-potential energy sector.
