Uganda Electricity Distribution Company

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company (UEDCL), established in 2001, aims to foster private-sector investment in Uganda’s electricity market. Managing Director Joseph Katera says, “Our mission is to improve Uganda’s electricity sector in every possible way in order to support the country’s economic growth and encourage investors to come here.” The company oversees Uganda’s private electricity-distribution company (UMEME), which currently has a 96% market share.

Joseph Katera explains that the Uganda Electricity Distribution Company is involved in every aspect of electricity distribution, from assisting private investors to monitoring distribution, building distribution grids, manufacturing wooden poles for power lines and reforesting areas where trees for poles have been cut. “Most of our revenue is from our production of electricity poles. We have 50 hectares under cultivation and give seedlings to local people for them to grow into poles. We are looking to double our capacity to export poles to neighbouring countries,” Joseph Katera explains.

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company, operating under the Ministry of Energy, has established a strong track record through its partnerships with the World Bank and the EU. The company welcomes the chance to work with foreign investors. Joseph Katera concludes, “We are a professional partner committed to skilled financial management, transparency and accountability.”
